Your question is Handling Difficult Employee. Take a moment with it on the right.
Talk me through your thinking if you like. When you're confident, submit your answer and I'll grade it like a real screen (7/10 or better passes).
Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult employee or subordinate and how you handled it.
This was asked in the behavioral STAR stage. The question probes how you address performance or conduct concerns while maintaining fairness, trust, and operational standards. The interviewer is looking for direct communication, sound judgment, ownership of the outcome, and appropriate escalation rather than avoidance or blame.
A strong response should use one specific past example, explain the employee’s behavior and its impact, distinguish coaching from formal performance management, and describe the result. Be prepared to explain what you learned and what you would do differently.
