Digit Removal Maximization

MediumPython

Problem

Return the largest value if a digit '5' is removed from a number.

Implement remove_digit_five(number), removing exactly one occurrence of the digit 5 and returning the resulting integer. The input is guaranteed to contain at least one 5; support both positive and negative integers, where "largest" means numerically greatest. Leading zeros after removal should be interpreted normally when converting the result back to an integer.

Constraints

  • -10^18 <= number <= 10^18
  • The decimal representation of number contains at least one digit 5
  • Remove exactly one occurrence of the digit 5
  • Return an integer
