Detect Cycles in Service Graph

Detect Cycles in Service Graph

MediumPython

Problem

Pinterest services may depend on other services before they can process requests. Given a directed dependency graph, determine whether the graph contains a cycle that could prevent a valid startup or deployment order.

Implement has_dependency_cycle(dependencies), where each dictionary key is a service and its value is a list of services it directly depends on. A directed edge from service to dependency means the service requires that dependency. Return True if any cycle exists, otherwise return False.

Formal Specification

  • Input: dependencies, a dictionary mapping strings to lists of strings.
  • Output: A boolean. Return True when at least one directed cycle exists; otherwise return False.
  • Services that appear only in dependency lists are valid nodes and should be treated as having no outgoing edges unless they also appear as keys.

Constraints

  • 1 <= number of distinct services <= 10^5
  • 0 <= number of dependency edges <= 2 * 10^5
  • Service names are non-empty strings
  • The graph may be disconnected
  • A service may appear only in a dependency list
  • The input dictionary must not be modified
