DENSE_RANK vs RANK

MediumPython

Problem

Explain the difference between DENSE_RANK and RANK.

Asked in the interview stage. Implement the distinction for an array of scores ranked from highest to lowest.

Input and Output

Implement rank_scores(scores). Return an array where each element is [rank, dense_rank] for the corresponding input score. RANK assigns the same rank to ties and leaves gaps. DENSE_RANK assigns the same rank to ties without gaps.

Constraints

  • 1 <= len(scores) <= 1000
  • Scores are integers
  • Rank from highest score to lowest score
  • Return results in the original input order
