Write a Python function to deduplicate a list of items.

Implement def deduplicate(items): to return a new list containing each distinct hashable item once, preserving the order of its first occurrence. The input list may be empty, and the original list must not be modified.

Constraints

  • 0 <= len(items) <= 10^4
  • Every item is hashable
  • Items may be integers, strings, or other hashable Python values
  • Return a new list and do not modify the input list
