Debugging Library Code

HardPython

Problem

Tell me about a time you were asked for specific lines of code inside functions inside open-source libraries.

For this coding exercise, implement the extraction task directly. Given Python source from an open-source library such as PySpark and requests containing qualified function names plus inclusive absolute line ranges, return the exact requested source lines in request order. Lines must be inside each function body, excluding decorators and the function definition line.

Signature: def extract_function_lines(source, requests):

Input is a source string and a list of dictionaries with function, start, and end. Return a list of line lists.

Constraints

  • 1 <= number of source lines <= 5000
  • 1 <= number of requests <= 1000
  • Requests contain valid qualified function names
  • Each requested range is one-based, inclusive, and lies inside the specified function body
  • Source is valid Python code
  • Function and class scope paths are unique
