Day-to-Day Scripting

HardPython

Problem

Describe the kinds of scripting and coding tasks you expect to do day to day, and how you approach them.

Implement a scheduler that orders security engineering tasks by priority while respecting dependencies between tasks. Given a list of tasks, each with an id, priority, and optional prerequisite task ids, return a valid execution order that always chooses the highest-priority available task next.

Function Signature

def schedule_tasks(tasks):

Input

tasks is a list of dictionaries with keys:

  • id: unique string
  • priority: integer, larger means higher priority
  • depends_on: list of prerequisite task ids

Output

Return a list of task ids in execution order.

If multiple tasks are available with the same priority, return them in lexicographically smaller id order.

Constraints

  • 1 <= len(tasks) <= 10^4
  • Task ids are unique strings
  • Each task has a valid integer priority
  • Dependencies form a DAG
  • Every dependency id appears in the input

Function Signature

def schedule_tasks(tasks):
