Problem

Tell me about a time you had to compromise on your design quality to meet a deadline. I’m especially interested in a real product decision — for example on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or another high-visibility surface — where you had to decide what to ship now versus what to defer. Walk me through how you made that trade-off, how you aligned partners, and what happened afterward.

What This Probes

This question tests whether you can make pragmatic design trade-offs without losing ownership of the user experience. In a fast-moving environment like Meta, designers often have to balance craft, speed, technical constraints, launch commitments, and cross-functional pressure. The interviewer wants to see whether you can protect the most important user outcomes, communicate clearly with product and engineering, and avoid treating quality as all-or-nothing.

They are also looking for maturity: can you distinguish between a reversible compromise and a harmful one, and can you create a plan to pay down design debt after launch rather than simply lowering the bar?

What 'Good' Looks Like

A strong answer uses one specific example with concrete stakes, names what quality bar was reduced and why, shows a deliberate prioritization framework, and ends with measurable results plus a lesson learned. The best answers show that you preserved the core user value, documented the compromise, and followed through after launch.
