Check If a Tree Is a BST

MediumPython

Problem

Design a function to check if a binary tree is a Binary Search Tree (BST).

Represent each tree as [value, left_subtree, right_subtree], where an empty subtree is None. Return True only when every left descendant is strictly smaller than its node and every right descendant is strictly larger. Implement is_bst(root) and return a boolean.

Constraints

  • 0 <= number of nodes <= 500
  • Node values are integers in the range -10^9 to 10^9
  • Duplicate values are not allowed in a valid BST
  • The tree representation is [value, left_subtree, right_subtree], with None for an empty subtree

Function Signature

def is_bst(root):
