Your question is Backfill Strategies. Take a moment with it on the right.

Talk me through your thinking if you like. When you're confident, submit your answer and I'll grade it like a real screen (7/10 or better passes).

You need to log in / sign up to chat or submit.

Problem

How do you do backfill?

Asked in the interviewer1 - technical assessment stage. Explain how you would backfill historical data or features after a pipeline, schema, or model change. Cover the workflow, correctness checks, production safety, and how you would prevent training-serving skew. Clarify assumptions before proposing implementation.

Deliverables

  1. Define the backfill scope, dependencies, and correctness criteria.
  2. Describe an idempotent batch architecture and execution strategy.
  3. Explain how you validate results before publication.
  4. Address feature-store updates, downstream training, and serving impact.
  5. Identify failure modes, observability, rollback, and restart behavior.

Constraints

Do not assume that historical data is complete or immutable. Discuss late events, schema evolution, duplicate records, privacy deletion requests, resource isolation, and coordination with online writes.
