Your question is Backend Design for Car Rental Web App. Take a moment with it on the right.

Talk me through your thinking if you like. When you're confident, submit your answer and I'll grade it like a real screen (7/10 or better passes).

Problem

Design the backend for a web application for a rental car reservation system that allows users to reserve a car online.

Asked in the HLD round stage. Assume user management and payments are pre-built. Cars are booked for whole days; the user selects capacity, S, M, or L, a date range, and a city. Reservations can be made up to one year ahead.

Discuss the API and data model, availability search, concurrency control, reservation workflow, storage choices, and failure handling. Explain where deterministic business logic is required and whether ML-based ranking is appropriate.
