Problem

How does implementing an API gateway improve the functionality of your microservice?

Asked in the AI interview stage. Microservices API gateway.

Provide a practical design for introducing an API gateway in front of an existing microservice. Explain which responsibilities belong at the gateway versus the service, how requests flow, and how the design improves security, reliability, observability, and client integration.

  1. Describe the gateway's core responsibilities.
  2. Explain authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, and API versioning.
  3. Define the request and response path, including gateway failure behavior.
  4. Discuss monitoring, testing, and rollout strategy.
  5. Identify important tradeoffs and failure modes.

Do not assume a specific cloud provider, traffic volume, business domain, or machine learning model. State which missing operational requirements you would clarify before implementation.
