Key Responsibilities
As a Data Engineer at Zoox, your daily work will revolve around building the infrastructure that powers our autonomous fleet. You will spend your time writing and maintaining production-grade ETL pipelines that handle massive sensor logs, including LiDAR, radar, and camera footage. You will collaborate closely with machine learning engineers to ensure they have the high-quality, labeled data required to train our models.
Beyond building pipelines, you will act as a consultant for other teams, helping them design efficient data schemas and optimize their queries. You will be responsible for the reliability of your systems, which means spending time on monitoring, troubleshooting production incidents, and continuously improving the performance of the data stack to support the rapid iteration cycles of our robotics teams.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How difficult are the technical interviews?
The difficulty is average to high. You should expect to be challenged on your fundamental knowledge, but the primary focus is on your ability to solve practical, real-world problems rather than obscure academic puzzles.
Q: What is the company culture like?
Zoox values collaboration and innovation. While the interview process can be intense, team members are generally described as encouraging and communicative.
Q: Is the interview process strictly technical?
No. You will face behavioral and logic-based questions. Being able to communicate your thought process and work well in a team is just as important as your coding ability.
Q: How long does the process take?
The process can take several weeks from the initial recruiter call to the final decision. Be prepared for a significant time commitment.
Other General Tips
- Show your work: In coding and design rounds, speak through your thought process aloud. Interviewers are often more interested in how you approach a problem than the final answer.
- Prepare for ambiguity: You may be given a problem with missing information. Ask clarifying questions to scope the problem before jumping into a solution.
- Know your resume: Be prepared to dive deep into any project you list on your resume. You should be able to explain the "why" behind your technical decisions.
- Research the mission: Understand what Zoox is trying to achieve with autonomous vehicles. Showing genuine interest in the domain can set you apart.
