The recruiter reached out to talk through the role and gauge my interest, and then the interview run-up happened over the next few weeks with two technical interviewers followed by the hiring manager. It all felt reasonably straightforward at first, and I stayed engaged while they moved through their steps.
After about the third week, I was finally extended an offer. The compensation number was exactly what I was making at the time, even though I had been explicit about what I would actually consider taking. I declined it and reiterated the compensation conversation from the recruiter call. The recruiter said he’d follow up with the manager, but then it went quiet—another week passed without anything coming back.

I got contacted by HR from their St. Louis office after a friend inside the company passed my resume along. I then set up an in-person interview with the hiring manager and a follow-up interview with two other engineers. The early technical parts were tied to what I had listed on my resume, and then I went into a whiteboarding task about a recent network design I’d worked on.
They drilled into my design decisions and asked how the specific technologies I chose behaved in practice—what tradeoffs I made and why. It moved fairly quickly after the interviews; I received an offer roughly 24 hours later, but I declined.
