I was laid off a few months earlier, so I’d been interviewing a lot and trying hard to land something new. My experience with Workday stood out immediately, mostly because the hiring manager didn’t seem fully engaged during our one-hour conversation. A lot of the time, the interviewer was focused on a phone—texting while also smiling—then occasionally they’d pause and ask what I’d said, before going right back to it.

I didn’t move past that conversation, and I felt like I never truly got a fair chance to demonstrate fit. Even though I wasn’t claiming I was a perfect match, the behavior during the call made it hard to trust the process. It left me feeling like corporate indifference, despite how the company represents empathy and equal opportunity in its communications.
