Average Negative San Diego, CA

My interview started with a sense that the structure would be solid, but it never really found a comfortable footing. I met with two interviewers, and instead of a clear overview of the role or the team, we went straight into a resume review. The conversation felt unstructured and, frankly, inappropriate—almost like the focus was on attacking the legitimacy of my background rather than figuring out how it could translate to what they needed.

A lot of the questions circled around why my experience didn’t come from large, traditional tech organizations, since I’d built my design work through nonprofit and small-company projects. I answered thoughtfully and stayed professional, but one interviewer repeatedly came across as antagonistic and reframed my responses in a way that suggested I was diminishing other paths or organizations. It felt less like alignment discussion and more like I was defending my credibility.

I went into the process excited because the company looked like a great place to work, and I’d put in effort to get to the interview through networking and multiple applications. Even so, it started off badly: the interviewer stood me up and then apologized late, claiming they’d forgotten and asking if I could do it later that day. When we finally did meet, the interview felt degrading and overly scrutinizing, like every question was designed to catch me out rather than understand my experience.

After the interview, I was asked to complete a five-page product competitive analysis. I spent days working on it, including Figma mockups to show how Whova could improve, and what made it feel especially frustrating was the sense that even without an offer, they’d have access to the work. The process didn’t feel collaborative—it felt like I was being used as a source of ideas.
