Wave Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at Wave: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, and compensation by level.
Interviewing at Wave
What the process looks like, and what Wave is really testing for.
Wave uses a mix of recruiter and HR screening, then coding work, then live collaboration. Across roles, the process includes take-home assignments and live pair programming, plus culture and leadership sign-offs, with systems design showing up heavily alongside programming and data work.
What you are tested on is consistent: problem solving, systems design, data-driven decision making, and stakeholder management. On the technical side, the highest prominence topics are Python, data analysis (general), engineering management, Kubernetes (k8s), Android app development, marketing analytics, AE sales role competencies, and UI development, and you will also see pair programming and take-home projects as major components.
The reported difficulty distribution is mostly medium and a meaningful portion is hard, with very hard present but rare. Offer rate is reported as 0.0% in the candidate reports you provided, so you should treat this guide as about what happens in the loop and how to prepare, not as a predictor of offers.
Pair programming and take-home work are central across roles, and systems design plus data-driven decision making are also very prominent, so expect to defend both your implementation choices and your reasoning under collaboration.
The Wave interview process
4 stages, based on 502 candidate reports.
Recruiter and HR screening
30-60 minYou have recruiter and or HR screening calls to discuss your background, interest in Wave, career expectations, and alignment with the role and values. Expect conversational questions about your experience and how you fit the position.
Take-home assignment
Several daysYou complete a take-home coding assignment to build a functional program from a clear specification. The assignment is described as simulating real production challenges, so your submission should include practical engineering choices.
Live pair programming
1-2 hoursYou participate in an intensive live session collaborating with a Wave engineer on your take-home code. Be ready to explain your decisions and iterate together during the session.
Culture and leadership steps
Half day to 1 weekDepending on the role, you may go through cultural fit interview steps, a final culture fit interview, and or a final leadership sign-off. Some roles also include management style assessment and multi-departmental interviews, and final conversations with engineering leaders, product managers, or founders.
