Difficult Neutral Berkeley, CA

My process started with a phone screen with another PhD, and the tone was very stats-and-math heavy. We dug into probability and statistics questions, and during the conversation I got the sense the interviewer wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the role. I asked directly, and I learned the position wasn’t especially flexible: new hires were initially assigned to teams in a somewhat random way, and the interviewer felt that sometimes people ended up in groups that weren’t a great fit.

The next day I moved into the first part of the virtual onsite, which had two technical rounds. One was a statistics round led by a statistics PhD, and the other was machine learning with someone whose background matched mine closely. I appreciated that the ML conversation aligned with my area, and it didn’t feel like I was being pulled into a totally different lane.
