I interviewed for a Backend engineering role on the Trust and Safety team, and the whole process felt very team- and org-dependent. After the recruiter portion, I went straight into a single technical round focused on problem solving and live coding. What stood out immediately was that it didn’t feel like the typical LeetCode-heavy format; instead, the focus was on clean coding practices.

During that round, I was asked to design a vending machine. The interviewer cared about how I structured the solution and communicated my reasoning, more than about cranking through classic algorithm patterns. The experience had that “build it clearly” vibe—less about memorized problem types and more about writing code in a maintainable way while thinking through the behavior.

Difficult Positive Japan

My process started with an HR call, and then the technical portion felt like it was deliberately stepping up in difficulty. In the first interview, I did a deep dive into my resume and got a medium LeetCode question. The next interview pushed harder with a difficult LeetCode problem, and by the time I reached the third round I was facing a systems-design-style question. After all that, I had another HR conversation focused on negotiation.

Even though the interviewer was friendly, the focus leaned toward fundamentals and definitions rather than just discussing my projects. I remember getting asked a lot about basic computer science concepts, and it threw me off because I felt like I was being judged for terminology and theory depth more than for how I’d applied things. The algorithm problems also felt genuinely tough—harder than what I was comfortable with based on my usual range.
