I started with an online application and then was contacted to set up a brief phone interview. The interviewer called almost ten minutes late and sounded like he was distracted. The very first thing he asked was what questions I had for him, and it was clear he didn’t have much he planned to ask me in return, so I filled the remaining time with as many questions as I could.
After that call, I was given a take-home coding challenge. It ended up being the kind of work that eats into your schedule fast, and I remember feeling annoyed because the effort didn’t seem aligned with respect for how much time candidates were investing. When they moved forward after the challenge, the whole process still felt like it could punish you for spending hours on something only to have the decision go against you—exactly the opposite of how invested I felt in the early conversation.

A recruiter contacted me through LinkedIn and after I replied, I had a phone screen with the recruiter. He sent a link to a code challenge, and once I submitted my code, the development team sent back feedback and basically told me I wasn’t a good fit.
The feedback was mostly fair and objective, but there was one comment that really got under my skin—something along the lines of an “HTML is a DIV wonderland” remark—and I remember feeling a bit of tension when it was written. It also felt like they were going to scrutinize every detail, so I ended up putting in a lot of time to get things polished to a high standard. Even after spending hours, there wasn’t any guarantee of moving to another phone or onsite round.
