From the start, I got the sense I might not be the fit they wanted. When I spoke with the hiring manager, their tone felt a bit intimidating, and I noticed myself second-guessing my answers while I was in the conversation.

Even with that uncomfortable feeling, they still moved me forward. I had expected them to drop the process after that first interaction because it didn’t feel particularly encouraging, but they did call me in again for a second interview.

Average Positive United States

My process was much more drawn out than I expected, and it moved in a pretty clear sequence over a couple of months. After the role was explained to me, I asked a lot of unscripted questions about motivation, scope, and even logistics, and that time quickly became a big chunk of the initial conversation. I was coming off a recent PhD and had relevant experience, just not an exact match, so I could feel them measuring how transferable my background was.

It started with the job post in early January and then picked up momentum. I got an email from the hiring manager to meet, then did a phone interview. After that, the HR business partner asked me to join a formal panel interview where I presented relevant aspects of my thesis. Once the panel was done, I was invited to fly out for an onsite interview, which I completed about two weeks later.
