I started with a brief recruiter/HR screen where the process was explained, but I didn’t really get meaningful questions that reflected the role. I waited for follow-up and had to reach out myself after about two weeks. After that, I was sent a written project that was described as something like a 2–3 hour effort.
That estimate didn’t match reality for me. The assignment pushed me to navigate Stripe’s API docs and essentially run API calls from scratch, then build out responses tied to real payment flows and a customer request for Python API help. Completing it properly required a lot of Stripe-native context that I didn’t have yet, and it ballooned well beyond what I had been told. Once I submitted, I got a rejection email in less than 24 hours with no feedback and no clear explanation of what I missed.

I interviewed for engineering manager at Stripe through a fairly structured sequence: after early screening, there was a take-home assignment, then a couple of virtual interviews, and finally a few on-site rounds at their Austin, Texas location before an offer discussion. I didn’t end up receiving an offer, but the overall shape of the process was clear enough: written work first to signal skills, then live rounds to validate how I thought and communicated under pressure.
