I started with a screening conversation that focused on my research and data analysis background. About a week later, I was asked to complete a take-home assignment. A few days after I submitted it, they scheduled a second interview.
During that second conversation, I went over the assignment with the hiring manager, and they told me there would be a final round with executives the following week. I didn’t end up hearing anything back about that final step. Roughly two weeks later, I received a rejection email from the same hiring manager.

My early rounds felt like they were built around getting a real sense of how I think about research and how my experience translates to their work. I talked about my past projects and what I was interested in, including the structure of the research group and how I’d fit into it. I also had conversations that stayed pretty smooth and friendly, with room for me to discuss the research itself rather than getting interrogated.
At some point, my background and communication style became the backbone of the discussion. One professor-style conversation focused on my research interests, and the questions weren’t especially strict; it felt more like an honest exchange. Another time, I emphasized how my prior experience related to the research topic, and I got both behavioral-style questions and more conceptual ones that tied back to what I’d done before.
