Easy Neutral Denver, CO

After applying for a contract software engineer role at Spectrum, I first had an initial screening conducted by the engineering team. That set me up for a more detailed interview with the hiring manager, where the focus was on evaluating my experience and whether the role fit me.

The hiring manager conversation itself stood out because it didn’t feel fully engaged—at one point the interviewer seemed distracted and stepped away from the computer for a chunk of the time. A couple of other engineers joined, and we still covered technical ground; the technical interview portion was run in Java. Overall, the process felt straightforward rather than formal.

Difficult Negative United States

I interviewed for a software engineer position, but the experience felt completely off from the job description. During the interview, the focus landed entirely on DevOps topics—things like Terraform, Docker, and AWS infrastructure—with no real opportunity for me to demonstrate software engineering or coding.

To make it worse, the interview felt disengaged: the interviewer didn’t turn on their camera, and the questions stayed locked to infrastructure instead of development. I answered the DevOps questions confidently, but I still got told they were looking for more experience. When I asked directly why the role was labeled software engineering if no coding was involved, I was told there wasn’t really any coding expected.
