I got pulled into a backend interview for Snowflake that centered on a coding question about representing a forest. The problem described a forest as a list of integers where each element stored the index of its parent node, and it laid out the rules clearly: every node holds its parent’s index, and for a root node the parent index is the node’s own index.

After that prompt, the rest of the session was essentially me working through the logic and explaining my approach as I reasoned about how to interpret the parent pointers in that list form. The focus stayed tightly on the data-structure modeling implied by the forest representation, and I remember thinking the setup was straightforward but the implementation details would matter.
