I applied online and then got a random call from a recruiter. Very quickly, they asked for my salary expectations, and when I shared a figure under $100K, the conversation immediately shifted into explanations about benefits and lifestyle rather than treating it like straightforward compensation talk. We then moved into an initial phone screening with a manager.

The phone call started with them being late, and the role sounded brand new. They asked two questions about Kubernetes that didn’t really feel grounded in how my answers were developing, and I tried to broaden the discussion with other approaches, but it was pretty clear they weren’t very familiar with the technology being asked about. After that, they wrapped up in just a few minutes, admitted they were reading over my resume, and then the call essentially stalled while they looked through my experience. Overall it left me with a strong impression that they were unprepared and not engaged, which was disappointing given the effort I put in.
