My first big technical step involved design-style thinking, and I ran into a problem that made the round feel unproductive. One interviewer didn’t understand the design principle I was explaining and showed very little interest in hearing the rationale behind it. It felt like they were already moving on before I could land the full point.

The process ended up being stopped early and felt like a one-and-done rejection after a single senior-level system design session. Even in that segment, the attention wasn’t on my strengths or how I would reason through tradeoffs. It felt more like the interviewer wanted me to rely on memorized, template-style solutions rather than demonstrate genuine engineering judgment.

My interview loop centered on AI-assisted coding, and the format made that clear from the start. It began with a phone screen, then moved into multiple video rounds where I worked on coding problems that were framed specifically around using AI tools. In one round, the interviewer even said I could use AI to solve the challenge, and I did, using an AI coding setup to move quickly. The interviewer seemed surprised by how fast I got to a strong first pass, then shifted into follow-up questions that felt a bit scattered and sometimes random as the time ran down. When I didn’t have enough time left, it basically turned into loose question-and-answer.

Another coding round felt more stressful because I had a different stance on AI assistance. I chose to disable AI and code manually, and the task involved building a logger system with multiple handlers. The follow-up work required optimizing the implementation by indexing words to improve search efficiency. When the interviewer said their standards were extremely high, I left feeling frustrated and unsure what criteria they were holding me to.
