My first technical interaction had an awkward start: nobody asked me to turn my camera on, and the interviewer’s camera was off too. Once we began, I felt like I was being questioned by someone who didn’t know the material as well as the format implied, which made it hard to calibrate.

Later, I ran into an even more jarring technical mismatch. I had done a difficult HackerRank screen and scored well, but then I heard the role’s split had changed—more frontend and less backend .NET—even though the job description didn’t seem to reflect that shift. The interview setup didn’t feel aligned with what I prepared for. During the technical session, only one developer showed up and the camera wasn’t on; the session was framed as mostly frontend with one backend .NET component to follow.
