My interview started with HR, and I left that first conversation with uncertainty about the specifics of the role, especially around location. I still had many fundamental questions unanswered, which made me feel like I was going in a bit blind. Talking with the team lead helped paint a more positive picture, but they also highlighted internal change and uncertainty linked to recent layoffs, and that theme followed me into the rest of the process.

The two manager interviews were a contrast. One manager seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the work and spoke positively about the team I would potentially join. The last manager interview was the one that felt unusual and uncomfortable: they literally held a printed copy of my resume up to the camera and went through it point by point, with occasional snarky comments and questions.

After I applied, the process included assessment work right away and it felt genuinely hard. The first piece was a coding assessment where I was expected to solve a problem end to end using Okta’s technology. They told me I could use any programming language, but it still turned into a real test of whether I could design a solution and implement it cleanly under time pressure.

The take-home was a bigger stretch than I expected: it was positioned as about a two-hour coding task, and the actual prompt involved running a breadth-first search over a weighted map. I worked through it on the Codility platform, which added an extra layer of friction for me—its editor didn’t offer the usual syntax help or IntelliSense. By the end, I felt the experience was grading my output more on tooling quirks than on the quality of my algorithmic approach.
