I went through a fairly normal sequence at first: a recruiter and an engineering manager conversation before a take-home technical test. The test involved a large dataset that needed to be sorted by maximum score, and I approached it with something like a max-heap. I ran into a frustrating mismatch between the provided style guide and the actual dimensions asked in the assignment.
The design requirements didn’t fit what the designer’s guidance produced, and even small layout details became part of the critique. What bothered me more was that the feedback didn’t align with engineering reality—while I could see the nit about keeping header text on the same line, the broader issue was that the provided constraints didn’t really match the goal. The tone felt like I was being graded for presentation details rather than the correctness of the underlying solution.
