Difficult Neutral United States

My application to the software engineer process took a little over two months from start to accepting an offer, but what surprised me most was how many steps there were. For this role, I ended up going through seven interviews total, mixing technical rounds with behavioral conversations. The whole arc felt long and involved rather than a quick loop.

Across the technical side, I was tested with a mix of coding and systems-design style thinking, and the difficulty level felt genuinely high and cumulative. On the behavioral side, it wasn’t just generic interview talk; it leaned into product sense and general fit questions that made it clear they cared about how I thought, not only whether I could solve problems.

Average Negative United States

I started with the standard online process: a recruiter screen where the conversation stayed high level, followed by a call with the hiring manager. The interview format was familiar, but the tone of the hiring manager conversation really threw me off. I expected direct feedback, but what I experienced came off as aggressive and dismissive instead of constructive.

What made it feel especially bad was the way my background was interpreted. Even though I applied for a senior individual contributor track, the hiring manager seemed to treat any prior leadership and managerial experience as a liability. I didn’t get much substance beyond a vague “team fit” explanation, but the rejection felt tied to that mismatch in how they viewed my history.
