I went through a pretty structured Netflix interview sequence that felt targeted and a little harder to “game” than classic coding prep. My first screening had three parts: an HR-style call where we covered why I applied and walked through my background, then a technical coding round that mixed Python and SQL using a simple data model, and finally a deeper catch-up with the hiring manager where they drilled into specifics of what I had actually worked on before. If I made it past that screening, I’d move on to a second stage that included two more coding interviews plus an additional HR interview focused on culture.
For the coding rounds, one interviewer was a data engineer and the format looked close to the screening coding, just more in-depth—still centered on Python/SQL with a data-model vibe. The other coding interview was run by a software engineer and aimed more at algorithms and data structures; it wasn’t LeetCode, but I still had to reason through an algorithmic-style problem that felt like something you’d run into at Netflix. The later rounds were supposed to include more stakeholders and an engineering director, but I didn’t get that far.

My first step was a Senior Data Engineer phone screen that felt more like a conversation about how I think than a test of memorized trivia. The recruiter set expectations that the call would center on past experience and real problem-solving, and the questions ended up matching that pretty closely.
The technical portion was essentially framed as how I would handle a data problem, with follow-ups that asked how I’d design the solution. I also got prompted to describe a failure I’d experienced, which made the behavioral side feel tightly tied to technical judgment. At some point, there was also a SQL-oriented question style—focused on reasoning through things like grouping, ranking, or duplicates—rather than just writing syntax for its own sake.

Distilled from the reports
Interview Structure & Timeline
The interview process typically involves multiple stages, starting with an HR call, followed by technical coding rounds, and concluding with behavioral interviews. Candidates noted that the timeline can be lengthy, sometimes taking up to two months to complete all rounds.

Technical Coding Rounds
Candidates can expect technical interviews that focus on Python and SQL, often involving data modeling and problem-solving rather than purely algorithmic challenges. The coding questions are designed to assess practical application and reasoning rather than rote memorization.

Behavioral & Cultural Fit
Behavioral interviews are a significant part of the process, with a strong emphasis on past experiences and alignment with Netflix's culture. Candidates should prepare to discuss their work history and how it relates to the company's values.

Communication Skills
Throughout the interview process, clear communication is crucial; candidates are evaluated not only on their technical skills but also on how well they articulate their thought processes and solutions. Many candidates felt that their ability to explain their reasoning was as important as their technical knowledge.

Take-Home Assessments
Some candidates reported completing take-home coding assessments that included tasks like designing data schemas and writing SQL queries. These assessments are generally seen as manageable but still require a solid understanding of data engineering concepts.
