What is a Forward-Deployed Engineer at Natera?
The Forward-Deployed Engineer role at Natera is a mission-critical position designed to bridge the gap between advanced AI capabilities and complex business operations. You will sit at the intersection of the central AI & Automation team and specific business domains—such as Clinical Operations, Lab Operations, Sales & Marketing, or Customer Experience. Your core objective is to identify high-leverage workflows where AI agents and automation can replace or augment human effort, delivering 10–100x improvements in speed and throughput.
This is not a traditional engineering role; it is a hybrid of technical execution and strategic business consulting. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of your solutions: mapping existing data flows, designing future-state workflows, building the necessary agents or pipelines, and ensuring they run reliably in a production environment. You are expected to be "in the work," meaning you will spend significant time coding, debugging, and tuning prompts, while simultaneously partnering with domain leadership to align your technical roadmap with their highest-priority business outcomes.
Success in this role requires a unique combination of technical rigor and operational empathy. You must be able to handle "integration gnarliness"—including authentication protocols, schema drift, and rate limits—while keeping the end-user experience in mind. By building modular, reusable patterns, you will not only solve immediate domain challenges but also contribute to a compounding internal library of automation tools that benefits the entire Natera organization.
