I ended up with a phone interview with a trader, and the whole thing surprised me by how not-technical it felt. The conversation was about motivation, my knowledge of financial news, and background, with a lot of back-and-forth questions. I didn’t get pushed into the kind of detailed technical drilling I’d been bracing for.
It took about 30 minutes, and by the end I was also allowed to ask my own questions, which made it feel more like a genuine discussion than a checklist. I didn’t get an offer, but I left feeling like I’d been judged more on my understanding of the market context and my conversational clarity than on technical math prowess. The reflection I’m left with is that it was easier than expected, but it still required being sharp about news and what I’d bring to the role.

I also noticed that the technical element wasn’t the main driver of the whole day—most of the emphasis was on how I communicated and how I thought through scenarios.
