Average Positive Ireland

After an initial recruiter conversation, I ended up going through a fairly thorough, multi-stage process. The recruiter focused on my background and skills, then I moved into a technical round that felt like it was designed to evaluate both problem-solving and how I worked through ambiguity. That stage included live coding alongside a handful of deeper technical questions.

What stood out was how the process kept switching modes. I had a team-lead style conversation with scenario-based troubleshooting, including how I’d approach diagnosing a slow database. After that, I went through multiple in-depth technical interviews that covered databases and Linux, plus other areas that matched what I’d listed on my CV. The rhythm of it made it feel comprehensive rather than narrowly focused.

I started with a recruiter conversation and then went straight into a Karat technical interview. The Karat portion had a small number of questions, but it was still clearly framed as a serious gate—mine leaned into LeetCode-style problems and I didn’t pass that stage. The disappointing part was that the process didn’t immediately end for me; after Karat, there was still another technical round scheduled, which made the experience feel a bit inconsistent.

Even though I didn’t clear the Karat hurdle, I got decent feedback from the Karat interview I attended, and that helped soften the blow a little. End to end, it wasn’t a long, multi-day onsite marathon for me, but it did feel like a lot of weight was placed on the Karat screening—enough that if you stumble there, you’re fighting uphill despite what happens later. I ultimately wasn’t extended an offer.

What to expect

Distilled from the reports

Recruiter & Initial Screening

The interview process typically starts with a recruiter call focused on background and skills, followed by a technical screening, often using the Karat platform. Candidates should be prepared for both general questions and specific technical assessments early on.

Behavioral & Cultural Fit

Behavioral interviews are integrated into the process, focusing on past experiences and alignment with MongoDB's values. Candidates should be ready to discuss their background in a structured manner, often using the STAR method.

System Design Round

For candidates who progress, there is often a system design interview that may lack clear guidance, making it crucial to be prepared for open-ended questions and to articulate design choices effectively. Some candidates found this round to be less structured than expected.
