Everything we are today started in a place you might not recognize—a video rental store. Our founder, John Eldred, was encouraged by a customer to sell VHS tapes to public libraries. The first librarian he contacted soon opened an account and Midwest Tape was born. Midwest Tape now serves more than 3,100 public library systems around the world and we still personally answer the phone, almost always within two rings. As Midwest Tape grew and listened to feedback from librarians, we realized a need for more and better content, leading to the creation in 2010 of an affiliated company, Dreamscape Media, LLC. Dreamscape is an award-winning, multi-format media publisher of fiction and nonfiction audiobooks, book-based children’s read-along video programs, and unique documentaries and films. Dreamscape creates quality content for both the retail and library channels. Our most innovative creation, hoopla, also was born from library feedback. When digital media started gaining momentum, Libraries were limited in purchasing options and were paying too much. We pioneered the transactional delivery model—hoopla “Instant”—that allows Public Libraries to pay only when patrons borrow. Libraries can now offer more than 1.1 million titles that are always available. hoopla also offers one-copy/one-user titles via hoopla “Flex,” making the latest and hottest titles available to library patrons.
