I started with a focused 1:1 discussion with the PI. The process felt fairly clear, but the tone depended on the PI’s style. After that, I had to present my research work to the lab, and then I wrapped up with another 1:1 conversation with lab people.
Before the PI meeting, I shared my background and followed up by sending papers and posters over email. In that discussion, the PI walked me through a few project ideas and asked how I could contribute to them. I left feeling like I hadn’t nailed my explanation—my ideas were kind of average—but they still brought me into one of the PI’s projects at the lab. Looking back, the hardest part wasn’t the format so much as being confident enough to translate my experience into what their specific work needed.
