Average Positive Seoul

After a recruiter call, I ended up with a fairly classic investment banking interview flow: a mix of technical and behavioral, but with the technical side doing most of the heavy lifting. I was asked to talk through my fit and motivations, then I got pulled into valuation questions where they really wanted a structured explanation. The questions leaned heavily into TEV and DCF, and they also tested what I knew about comps-style thinking and capital structure relationships through cap-related topics.

What surprised me was how much weight was put on getting the mechanics right while still staying clear under pressure. I had to talk through deal-relevant concepts rather than just recite definitions—explaining work I’d done and walking through how I approached M&A-style analysis. Even when the questions felt straightforward, they pressed for detail and consistency, especially around valuation assumptions and the logic of the output.

My process started online and moved fast. I did an online test first, then a recorded interview where they folded together multiple prompts into a single question—telling me about myself, why Lazard, and what would make me a good fit, all at once. The preparation time was tight for parts of the recording, which pushed me to be concise while still sounding thoughtful.

After that, I went through an assessment centre built around both group judgment and individual communication. I was given a company profile and had a short window to read it, then I discussed with the group which M&A target acquisition would make the most sense for a made-up scenario. The second part was a one-on-one presentation with an associate based on a transaction I picked, and I had a couple of days ahead of time to prepare and submit the materials. During the day, I presented briefly and then handled questions right after.
