My first step was a one-on-one call that lasted about half an hour. The conversation started with the usual prompts—talk me through your background and why the firm—then quickly narrowed into my research work. I felt like the interviewer was generally engaged, but they kept pushing for specifics about one of my programs until we were really drilling down into what I’d done, why I’d chosen it, and the reasoning behind it.
The overall experience felt solid and professional, but it was clear they weren’t satisfied with surface-level descriptions. By the end of the call, I had a good sense that the goal was to see whether I could defend my research choices in a detailed way, not just give a high-level overview. I didn’t end up getting an offer, and I left thinking I would have needed to be even more crisp and granular on that particular research thread.

Average Negative United Kingdom
My phone interview felt rough from the start. The interviewer seemed completely disengaged and was more focused on their phone than on what I was saying, which made the whole call feel distinctly unprofessional. They were huffing and puffing during the conversation, like the interview was a chore they’d been forced into.
The questions weren’t the part that bothered me most—the tone did. Even when I tried to answer clearly and keep the momentum going, the interviewer’s lack of attention made it hard to feel like there was genuine interest. I didn’t move forward from that stage, and honestly, it left me with a pretty negative impression of how the process was run.
