My first round was set up as a two-part flow: an initial screening followed by a more code-intensive final interview with the hiring manager framing the direction. In my screening itself, I ended up only speaking with the hiring manager and one mid-to-senior developer, and most of the technical questioning came from that developer rather than the manager.
The technical questions felt basic, but the issue was the requirement to answer them exactly in the way they supposedly ran their IT environment. I remember feeling stuck because I didn’t have inside knowledge of their specific “shop” practices, and the way the questions were delivered made it feel like the goal wasn’t assessing my overall competence.
