Difficult Negative Solon, OH

HR reached out and set up a short Zoom call with herself and a director. The director mostly checked whether I felt the job matched me and whether I seemed like a good fit. After that, they booked me for a plant tour and an additional interview with their chief chemist, and that chemist interview took the entire allotted hour and felt extremely difficult.

They also flew me out with expenses covered for the interview, which sounded great until I hit a logistics snag: the rental and hotel weren’t actually prepaid, so I had to put everything on my own card and handle reimbursement afterward. The plant tour and the in-person part of the process went well, though. I felt like I presented myself strongly and was able to meet the challenge the director had described, and I left believing they were moving quickly.

Average Negative United States

I joined a Microsoft Teams call that lasted about 30 minutes, focused on the Standard Products team—what the responsibilities would look like and how my resume connected to it. It was framed as an initial recruiter-style screening conversation, but it quickly felt off.

The recruiter didn’t seem to understand engineering-related responsibilities and couldn’t give reasonable answers when I asked about projects and team structure. Instead of clarifying, they pushed back by implying I was unprepared and didn’t understand the vague job description, which made the whole call feel more like a mismatch in communication than a real assessment of fit. By the end, I had a clear sense the process was headed toward a no.
