After I applied to the IBM site, I got an invitation to complete an online technical assessment a day later. The questions focused on Python and SQL, and the level felt like easy-to-medium LeetCode-style problems. Shortly after, I was asked to do a recorded interview format—mostly straightforward competency-style questions—then the next stage moved into scheduled interviews.
That following round was a mix of conversational and structured interviews. I joined a couple of Zoom sessions after the assessment, with one covering Python/SQL basics alongside behavioral questions, and the other being purely behavioral. Each video/behavioral response felt timed too: there was a short preparation window and then a brief response period, which made it important to stay crisp. The whole flow felt fairly organized compared to what I’d heard elsewhere.

I went through a more “data engineering deep dive” path where the interview content mapped pretty directly to the job. After a recruiter screening, I spoke with the hiring manager, and then I ended up on a final panel. The panel covered SQL and Snowflake topics, and it also touched agentic AI, which surprised me a bit because it felt broader than what I expected for a data engineer role.
The Snowflake side wasn’t just surface-level questions. I remember having to reason about how components work and how to think about performance and real-world data behavior, and the discussion stayed technical in a way that felt grounded in actual platform usage. On the Python/SQL side, I also got prompted on code and data-handling scenarios, and the interviewers followed up to test whether I understood tradeoffs rather than just naming features.
