Difficult Positive Mississauga, ON

After a recruiter step, I ended up with a coding-focused gauntlet that leaned heavily toward Java and recursion. The first big assessment was a two-hour coding exercise built around a minesweeper-style idea, but simplified. After that, the rest of the assessment time went into additional questions, including a set of Java problems that pushed me on recursion and working with data structures like maps.

Not long after, I sat in a second round where two interviewers reviewed my submission. This part was pretty conversational, and instead of just moving on to new problems, they asked me to walk through my thought process—why I made certain choices and how I reasoned through the solution as I went. The overall feeling was that they weren’t only judging correctness; they wanted to hear how I approached the problem.

I went through an OA first, then a video interview with multiple rounds. The online assessment had two tasks: one was a simple jQuery action to remove table cells where the background color matched the text color, and the other was linked to a blog (the details weren’t fully spelled out to me in advance). Once that stage ended, I moved into a four-round video sequence.

In the first coding rounds, I worked on algorithm-style questions. One asked me to check whether a string was a palindrome (using JavaScript), and another asked me to build a map-like structure from something like “a.b.c” with a given value in Java. I then explained a project from my resume and drew out a structure diagram on a canvas. The next round mixed basic knowledge across Java, CSS, and JavaScript—topics like Java volatile, annotations, interfaces, transactions, modifiers, CSS pseudo-elements and pseudo-classes, JavaScript variable scope, and event bubbling came up, along with a system-design prompt about designing a chat room (including modules and database design, with a reminder to think about WebSockets).
