I had an interview that felt inappropriate and more personal than it ever needed to be. The interviewer started asking questions about what I was like in high school, what other people thought of me, and even tried to tie it back to things I couldn’t really rationalize or justify. It also didn’t seem connected to the role—high school felt especially unrelated, even compared to my later involvement and people skills from college.
What bothered me most was that the conversation never really dug into my actual work experience or anything beyond vague personal impressions. Instead of exploring whether I could do the job, it kept circling back to opinions about me and how others viewed me. I left feeling extremely disappointed because it didn’t match the purpose of an account executive interview.

During the phone conversation, they kept emphasizing that they “hire C students,” and somehow framed it as reassurance that you didn’t have to try very hard as long as you were nice and had a good attitude. The tone came off dismissive rather than like a serious evaluation.
Because the process was built around that kind of framing, the interview felt odd overall. It didn’t really feel like I was being assessed for fit and capability the way sales interviews usually are, and I walked away with the sense that the bar and expectations were being communicated in a way that didn’t feel respectful.
