After a recruiter screening, I moved into a short manager round where it was mostly about my resume and background. What stood out was how the next step was tightly structured: I had about an hour and a half for a live coding React build.
I built a tic-tac-toe application with the interviewer guiding me in phases. The expectation was very much to implement the pieces while also staying aligned with what the interviewer was asking for as we went. I had to explain the process step by step as I coded, and I kept communicating what I was implementing instead of just typing in silence. I was able to get the basic functionality working and I also managed to implement one of the advanced features, including tracking history, plus I worked on the undo capability.

My process started with a phone call with a recruiter, then I joined a Zoom technical interview with an engineer. That technical round was focused on data structures and algorithms, and they didn’t require me to write code during the interview itself. The setup felt straightforward, but the technical screening didn’t end up moving me forward.
Separately, I also had an interview where I was given Python and SQL exercises. The Python part was fairly simple, and the SQL task landed around medium difficulty. The round felt manageable, yet I still wasn’t advanced, and I got the sense they might have had other candidates in mind. I couldn’t help thinking the decision may have been influenced by my non-traditional background rather than the difficulty of the work.
