Average Negative Croatia

I interviewed for a senior Go backend role on a short-term contract. The process started with a home task that I’d present, and then I had a live coding session to add new features for about 45 minutes. The assignment was centered on building an input parser, validating inputs, and producing results from variable elements. I finished it with edge cases covered and unit tests included.

During the live call, I ran into a tricky requirement: accepting a number expressed as a word instead of a literal numeric value. I implemented that with some extra time left. A few days later I received a negative response, and it honestly felt like mismatched expectations more than fair engineering feedback—down to nitpicky preferences like using a specific conditional style or a particular unit-test library, and even whether a value should be a constant from the start. I felt judged on exact choices rather than on sound reasoning, and I didn’t like how it reflected on the engineering culture.
