Joining San Francisco and San Jose, Oakland makes up one-third of Northern California's Golden Triangle. Its diverse population numbers more than 420,000 residents. The city is a hub for the port of San Francisco Bay, as well as for the business elite and the higher educated. Environmental policies have helped propel Oakland to stand among the top green economies in the US. The city is served by a mayor and eight council members, who oversee a budget of more than $1 billion. It is home to the NBA's Golden State Warriors and national landmark, Lake Merritt.
