I went through the HackerRank part of Citadel Securities’ SDE internship process first. The assessment felt like it was split into two problems: one that was medium difficulty and another that was very math-heavy. It was designed around timed coding, and it felt like the math question was the one that would separate people quickly.

I remember trying to figure out how the pipeline worked—whether everyone who applied got sent the OA or if there was a resume shortlist first—because the assessment itself was the only thing I had visibility into. After finishing the two questions, I waited for the next step, but I never got a clear sense of the timeline or how much my results would automatically determine what came next.

Difficult Positive America, AL

I cleared the first round and it was based on HackerRank. The problem was explicitly about optimizing code: I had to improve an approach from O(n²) down to O(n). The prompt was based on the classic “best time to buy or sell stock” concept, which I’d already worked through on LeetCode before, so the core idea wasn’t totally new.

After I submitted the solution, I waited for feedback from the hiring team. The timeline they gave me was about a week, and that waiting period was honestly the longest part—once the coding was done, there wasn’t much I could do but wait.

What to expect

Distilled from the reports

Online Assessment (OA)

The interview process typically begins with a HackerRank online assessment featuring two coding questions, often with a mix of algorithmic and optimization challenges. Candidates should be prepared for timed conditions and a focus on problem-solving efficiency.

Technical Interviews

Following the OA, candidates encounter multiple technical interviews that emphasize LeetCode-style coding questions, often requiring a clear demonstration of problem-solving and coding logic. Expect a mix of algorithmic challenges and discussions around language-specific fundamentals, particularly in C++.

Behavioral Component

Some interviews incorporate behavioral questions early on to gauge cultural fit and communication skills alongside technical abilities. Candidates should be ready to discuss their experiences and ask questions to create a two-way dialogue.

Diversity of Questions

Candidates may face a variety of question types across interviews, including system design, data structures, and low-level concepts, which test both breadth and depth of knowledge. This variety can make the process feel intense and multifaceted.

Interview Structure & Timeline

The overall interview process is structured and can involve several rounds, often with a quick turnaround between stages. However, candidates report a lack of communication regarding their status after certain rounds, which can lead to uncertainty.

Performance Pressure

Candidates noted that the time constraints during assessments and interviews can create significant pressure, making it essential to remain calm and focused to perform well. Practicing under timed conditions can help mitigate this stress.
