After an initial recruiter call, I went into a Computer Science Fundamentals interview. Once I passed, the process escalated into four back-to-back interviews: programming language fluency, system design, a technical review focused on communication and strategy, and then communication and leadership.

I later learned all my other interviews went well, but the programming language fluency interview didn’t. The issue wasn’t that my code failed—rather, the interviewer felt my solution was too long and complicated. The task was very dependent on collections, and I was forced not to use anything from java.util, even built-in collections, so I had to re-implement what I needed from scratch.

The process felt like it had too many stages that didn’t map closely to the day-to-day work. It started with a recruiter screen, then I went through two separate coding tests, followed by a system design round and then a behavioral round.

What stood out to me was just how time consuming it all felt end to end. The difficulty wasn’t described as the biggest problem, but the overall friction was the number of steps and how long the process took. By the end, it just felt like the structure could be streamlined to be more efficient, because it dragged out without adding much signal about how I’d actually operate in the role.
