Difficult Negative London, England

My second-stage interview for a UI developer role went in a direction I didn’t expect. I thought we’d talk more about building and shipping frontend features, but the session became almost entirely about CSS.

The questions were extremely detailed, with terminology that felt unfamiliar even though I’d worked in frontend contexts. Honestly, it felt unrealistic to expect perfect recall of very specific CSS terms on the spot. During the interview, the interviewer mentioned a background outside of the area, and since I was already stressed, I struggled to follow clearly and felt disconnected. That vibe made the whole thing worse for me.

I had a relatively straightforward early flow: a short recruiter conversation followed by technical interviewing with multiple people. My first recruiter call was brief, and then I sat down for a technical interview panel that asked a lot of questions around web development and how I think through problems.

Across the technical conversations, I got both behavioral and technical questions, and each session had a slightly different focus. The behavioral side wasn’t vague—it was aimed at understanding how I worked to push myself, challenge my own thinking, and respond under questions. The technical side stayed grounded in core concepts, and the interviewers kept the environment professional and calm, with enough time for me to ask my own questions before the technical screen actually began.
